RE: Interesting RGV Data From the Monitor Newspaper

Last week we drove through several RV parks in Harlingen & San Benito and were amazed at how empty they were. We checked at least 5 parks and all of them were less than half full. I know that many RVs will be coming in around the first of January, but it still seems that occupancy is way off.

RE: Workcamping and the economy

We are not making any plans for workamping next summer. We don't feel we can commit this far out with the economy in the shape it is. We have workamped for three years and have always done it for site only -- no pay. DH is retired from GM, and we are uncertain if our pension will remain. If GM files bankruptcy, we may receive a portion of the pension, or nothing at all. After giving the company 29 years of our lives, we may have to park the rig and go back to work, if there are any jobs to be had. Hopefully, we will know more in the days and weeks ahead, but yeah, the economy is going to have an impact on a LOT of people.
I wonder how many RV parks will go under when people lose their jobs and are unable to travel. That, too, can affect the remaining workampers out there.

RE: Do Workampers get to choose their site?

We have found it varies from park to park. Some give you a nice site and others stick you in the less desirable spots...i.e. narrow, next to the bathroom or trash cans, muddy, or one of the basic sites, etc. I don't think you would ever be given a "premium" site because the park can rent those for more money. It is something you could bring up during the interview and let them know what you expect.

RE: First Christmas away, need advice

This is our third winter as snowbirds. The first two winters we didn't get to spend Christmas with the kids. DW was miserable and the kids were unhappy. This year, DW insists on going home for Christmas and not cheating the kids and grandkids out of their memories. We can spend the rest of the year on the road doing what we want to do, but holidays are important.
Maybe it will get easier, as some have said, but we aren't there yet.

RE: Insects Flying/Crawly RGV

We keep getting flying roaches in our RV. We kill one about every night, usually on the ceiling. We never see them in the day time and don't have roaches in our pantry.
Mosquitoes were bad in October, but it has been so windy lately, they are rarely seen.
Ants are everywhere....

RE: Whose on the road headed to the RGV?

Unleaded at Wal-Mart in Harlingen was $1.90 today. Diesel isn't coming down much in the Valley...still about $3.45.
It is supposed to be 90 degrees on Sunday.
Several RVs are arriving daily at our park so I know some of you are making your way south.
Life is good in the valley. Come join us.

RE: ANOTHER black tank odor question

We use 1/2 cup of Borax dissolved in water, flush it down the toilet after emptying the black tank. The Borax dissolves everything in the tank and there is absolutely no odor when you dump. It's cheap and works great; also environmentally safe.

RE: Internet services at Cg's

Llano Grande in Mercedes also offers free internet with your choice of modem or wi-fi. It is a friendly park and we love it here.

We're Baaack in the RGV

We arrived in the RGV earlier this week to hot and humid temperatures and it sure felt like coming home. There isn't much activity in our park yet and I wonder how many snowbirds won't be flying south this year due to the economy. :h
We just couldn't wait to make a trip to the Don-Wes Flea Market on Wednesday. Even though less than half the vendors are set up, we still managed to find a few "must haves." :B Can't wait for it to be in full-swing.
This weekend is the international sand castle competition on South Padre Island. We'll be going to that on Saturday.
Whatch'all waitin for? Come on down!

RE: Overnight Camping with 2 vehicles??

We travel the same way you do and have never been charged extra. We just tell the office we need a a large space that will accommodate both vehicles. No worries...:W

RE: South to Oklahoma for "$2.35 gal" winter?

I lived in Oklahoma all my life, so I speak from experience. December through February are very cold months. While ice storms are common, there usually isn't much snow. The wind blows a LOT and there is always a wind chill index in addition to the air temperature. We stayed in our 5th wheel two winters in Oklahoma and nearly froze to death. No more. Now we go to Texas or Arizona for the winter. :B

RE: Have you worked Activities?

If the park is large enough, you could do a play with residents being the cast. I saw this done once in Texas as a dinner theater performance.
Last winter in Arizona, I proposed the idea to the activities department. They immediately said "yes." I became the play director, stage builder and leading actor. We held auditions and then practiced hard for three months. The play was performed two times and was a huge success. You will have to pay royalties on the play, but it doesn't amount to very much. We made a lot of money for the park's coffers.
Good luck.

RE: Furniture...tough one

We replaced the heavy furniture in our 5th wheel with lighter weight alternatives. The RV furniture wasn't comfortable and, as fulltimers, we wanted comfy recliners because we spend so much time in them!!
The original sofa bed was a bit tough to get out, but 2 strong men were able to do it. We replaced it with a love seat. The backs came off the new recliners making it easy to get them into the RV. The changes made the 5th wheel feel more like a home.

RE: Rates at Canyon Vista

Bill, didn't you spend a few winters at Victoria Palms? We were at Llano Grande before moving to Arizona. I've noticed your posts in the past. We are spoiled to the likes of VP and LG so I appreciate your reviews on Canyon Vistas, hoping it is similar in style.

Rates at Canyon Vista

We are looking at campgrounds in the Apache Junction, AZ area for the upcoming winter. Canyon Vista seems to be popular. Does anyone know what last season's rates were for three or four month stays? The website does not show rates.
Thanks,
Marilyn

RE: Load G Tires

We had a blowout on a Goodyear G614 caused by tread separation. We also had some trailer damage. Goodyear reimbursed us without question for the damage and replacement tires (different brand). We were in a rural area and unable to get Goodyear tires. A second tire was beginning to separate, so based on all that we've read on this forum, we won't use Goodyear again.
